EMPATHY, CULTURE, COMMITMENT

I met Zeynep, a UW Seattle neuroscience student from Istanbul, Turkey, early in my freshman year. We began dating and became very close. At the time—and she noted this—I was struggling, battling malnutrition and deep exhaustion. She taught me to build an environment focused on personal growth. Every part of the person I have grown to become, she helped build. I learned that we do not grow in isolation; we grow only as deep as the soil of our community allows, and for that, I am grateful.

Loving her meant loving her world. I stood beneath the dome of the Hagia Sophia, an Eighth Wonder. I learned Turkish language to bridge the gap with her parents, bonding deeply with them despite the language barrier. I even received the name "Mehmet" at the mosque-fountain, a moment of connection I hold dear. It is my fundamental belief that diversity in experiences, backgrounds, and cultures is the greatest strength anyone can have. It is a true superpower.

When Zeynep faced her F1-visa expiration, we confronted the realities of a complex immigration system deeply rooted in terror. The decision to marry was simple: we chose a life together. I came to UW for an education, but I found a life partner.

Navigating the Green-Card process alongside her solidified my convictions. I have learned that cultivating empathy for experiences unlike your own is the most powerful value anyone can build.
